Principal Parts

Adjectives modify nouns. Adjectives are "describing words". In latin, you have two types of adjectives, 1st/2nd Declension adjectives, and 3rd declension adjectives. there principal parts always follow the same form, masculine singular, feminine singular, then neuter singular. Many times, you will see the principal parts written with the masc. sg. written out, and simply the endings for others. (e.g. bonus,-a, -um - good)

1st/2nd Declension Adjectives

These adjectives share the same endings as those of the first and second declension of nouns. they always follow this pattern for endings, "-us or r, -a, -um". For 1st/2nd declension adjectives, it is important to know gender of the principal parts.

e.g. bonus, bona bonum - good

laetus, laeta, laetum- happy

Romanus, Romana, Romanum - Roman

pulcher, pulchra, pulcrum

3rd Declension Adjectives

These adjectives take on the same endings as the 3rd declension, however with a few exceptions, -i replaces the -e for the ablative singular., and -ium for the genitive plural these principal parts are always "-is or -r, -is, -e"

e.g. acer, acris, acre - sharp

omnis, omnis, omne - all

immobilis, immobilis, immobile - motionless
